PREGNANCY FAQS

Here are some commonly needed remedies that are generally safe to use during pregnancy:

  • Headaches: Try Tylenol, lavender essential oils and cold packs.
  • Colds: Robitussin 12-hour, Vicks vapor rub, cough drops, Sudafed (used sparingly). DO NOT take medications with alcohol or Phenylephrine.
  • Constipation: Stool softener (Colace), laxatives (Milk of Magnesia), Senna, Tummy time tea, Metamucil.
  • Indigestion: Heartburn: Tums, Pepcid, Maalox, Rolaids.
  • Gas pain: Simethicone or Gas X.
  • Hemorrhoids: Preparation H, Tucks, sitz baths.
  • Insomnia: Unisom or Benadryl, chamomile tea (< 12g) and lavender essential oil.
  • Itching/rash: Benadryl oral or cream, calamine lotion, oatmeal lotion or bath.
  • Nausea: Unisom 12.5mg with Vitamin B6 50mg twice daily (medications will cause drowsiness), ginger and peppermint tea or hard candies.
  • Yeast and fungal infections: Gyne-Lotrimin 3, Monistat 3, Femstat 3.

Yes it is. Bleeding and spotting from the vagina during pregnancy are common. Up to 1 out of 4 (up to 25%) of all pregnant women have some bleeding or spotting during their pregnancy. Bleeding and spotting in pregnancy doesn’t always mean there’s a problem, but they can be a sign of miscarriage or other serious complications. You should contact your provider immediately to discuss your symptoms.

If before pregnancy, you were… You should gain…

  • Underweight BMI less than 18.5 28-40 pounds
  • Normal Weight BMI 18.5-24.9 25-35 pounds
  • Overweight BMI 25.0-29.9 15-25 pounds
  • Obese BMI greater than or equal to 30.0 11- 20 pounds

These activities usually are safe during pregnancy:
1. Walking. Taking a brisk walk is a great workout that doesn’t strain your joints and muscles.
2. Swimming and water workouts.
3. Riding a stationary bike.
4. Yoga and Pilates classes.
5. Low-impact aerobics classes.
6. Strength training.
